Welcome to the website of Gelligaer Historical Society.  The Society's aims are to study local history in the area of the old parish of Gelligaer in east Glamorgan, which includes the modern communities of Pontlottyn, Bargoed, Hengoed, Ystrad Mynach, Trelewis, Bedlinog, Fochrhiw and Deri as well as the village of Gelligaer itself. The society promotes this by arranging lectures, discussions, field meetings and by encouragement of research.  It promotes local history of the Gelligaer area and the surrounding villages and encourages visits to the heritage sites.

The Society meets on the last Wednesday of each month during the winter months at Llancaiach Fawr, where a talk is given. The talks are not necessarily restricted to the subject of Gelligaer, one recent talk being on the Pirates of the Bristol Channel. The society has, since 1964, periodically published a journal. see Publications

The society was founded in autumn 1961, and has produced a book to celebrate its 50th aniversary in 2011.
